Calvados and the Middle Ages
Discover Calvados and take a trip into the Middle Ages!
Bayeux, Caen and Falaise are three towns famous for the same person: William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and, later, King of England.

Caen
The Duke's Castle in the heart of the capital of Basse-Normandie can be proud of being one of the largest medieval buildings in Europe.
The Duke and his wife, Mathilde, had two abbeys built. These abbeys, gems of Romanesque architecture, escaped destruction and are now open to the public.
Caen town centre has maintained its medieval charm and, along the streets of the old town of Caen, it is possible to discover small architectural treasures, townhouses, paved streets and corbelled houses, etc.
Bayeux
The town has become famous for its tapestry. This 11th century work, listed by UNESCO as a "Memory of the World", is a unique work retracing the story of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror.

This treasure of history, known throughout the entire world, is an account of the fabled epic story of William the Conqueror.
Bayeux is transformed into a Middle Age town every year on the first weekend in July. The Medieval Festivities bring out onto the old streets jugglers, knights and other colourful characters.
Falaise
You must not miss William the Conqueror's Castle. The birthplace of William, this medieval castle stands on a rocky spur dominating the valley. Restored in the 20th century by a contemporary architect, it is open to visitors and offers original itineraries allowing you to imagine life in the Middle Ages. Every year, the Games Festival is organised here and pays tribute to all types of games. Also, do not miss a visit to the town, its streets and Gothic Church.
